US stock market opens higher

S&P 500 sets all-time daily high record on Monday

NEW YORK (AA) – The stock market opened higher on Monday as investors found confidence in the economy after Friday's strong job data.

The Dow Jones rose 62 points to begin the day at 18,208 points and the S&P 500 was up 6 points to open at 2,136. The Nasdaq gained 24 points to begin the day at 4,980.

The U.S. added 287,000 jobs in June, marking the highest monthly jump since October, according to the Labor Department while analysts expected 180,000 new jobs.

After the strong non-farm payrolls data on Friday, the S&P 500 reached 2,131 points followed by Monday's 2,136 points which made it an all-time high reflecting the positive sentiment in the market.

Meanwhile, oil prices were slightly up when the stock market opened Monday.

American benchmark West Texas Intermediate traded at $45.76 a barrel -- a 0.1 percent increase at the opening bell, and international benchmark Brent crude was at $47.09 per barrel with a 0.2 percent gain.
