US stock market opens higher

The Fed meeting, which begins Tuesday, is not expected to result in a interest rate hike

NEW YORK (AA) – The U.S. stock market opened with gains Tuesday as the Federal Reserve is not expected to increase its benchmark interest rate this month.

The Dow Jones rose 83 points to begin the day at 18,203 and the S&P 500 was up eight points at 2,147. The Nasdaq increased 19 points to start the day at 5,254.

The Fed's two-day September meeting begins Tuesday, and the bank will announce its interest rate decision on Wednesday, followed by a speech by the Fed Chair Janet Yellen.

Investors have taken a buying position in the market as a rate hike by the Fed is seen as a very low possibility on Wednesday, according to analysts.
