US stock market opens lower

Yield on 10-year US Treasury notes soars 5.3% to 2.539%

ANKARA (AA) - Major indices in the US stock market opened with losses Tuesday.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 4 points to 34,917 at 11 a.m. EDT (1500GMT). The S&P 500 fell 15 points, or 0.33%, to 4,567.

The Nasdaq fell 188 points, or 1.3%, to 14,345.

The VIX volatility index, known as the fear index, was up 5.9% to 19.67. The dollar index rose 0.16% to 99.16.

The yield on 10-year US Treasury notes soared 5.3% to 2.539%.

Precious metals were mixed with gold falling 0.03% to $1,931 per ounce but silver gaining 0.04% to $24.55.

Global oil benchmark Brent crude was trading at $107.01, down 0.4%, while US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) was at $102.77 -- a 0.5% loss.
