Housing starts fell 5.5 percent in May, despite expectation for an increase

NEW YORK (AA) - The stock market opened lower after housing data disappointed on Friday.

The Dow fell 10 points to start trading at 21,349 points, and the S&P 500 lost less than a point to open flat at 2,431 points.

The Nasdaq decreased 17 points to begin the last trading day of the week at 6,147 points.

Housing starts, which measures the change in the number of new constructions across the country, decreased 5.5 percent in May, from the month before, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce.

The market expectation was a 4.1 percent increase.
