NEW YORK (AA) - The stock market opened mixed Friday as the U.S. economy grew lower than expected in the fourth quarter of 2016.
The Dow fell four points to begin the last trading day of the week at 20,096 points and the S&P 500 lost one point to 2,295 points.
The Nasdaq, however, added three points to start the day at 5,658 points after American tech firms saw a rise in their share value.
With strong 2016 fourth quarter results announced late Thursday, Microsoft stock price gained 2.1 percent after the first bell Friday.
Hewlett Packard's share value also increased 0.5 percent.
The U.S. economy, however, grew by 1.9 percent in the fourth quarter of 2016, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced earlier Friday.
The market expectation for economic growth was 2.2 percent.
