US economy expands 1.4 percent in first quarter

NEW YORK (AA) - The stock market opened mixed on Thursday as technology firms' stocks declined but economic growth was revised up.

The Dow increased 4 points to begin trading at 21,458 points.

The S&P 500 lost 2 points to start the day at 2,438 points and the Nasdaq fell 31 points to 6,202 points.

At the first bell, technology giants Apple and Microsoft saw their shares decrease 0.8 percent and 1.4 percent, respectively.

The U.S. Department of Commerce revised up its first quarter economic growth figure for the second time.

The American economy grew 1.4 percent during the first quarter of the year, the department said earlier Thursday.

The growth rate for the first quarter was revised up to 1.2 percent, from 0.7 percent, on May 26, according to the department.
