ANKARA (AA) - Major indices in the US stock market were down at Monday's opening to kick off August on a lower note.
The blue-chip Dow lost 75 points, or 0.23% to open the day at 32,783. The S&P 500 fell 9 points, or 0.22%, to 4,121.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq decreased 8 points, or 0.07%, to 12,381.
During July, the Dow rose 6.7%, while the S&P jumped 9.1% and the Nasdaq soared nearly 12.4%. They have recorded their best monthly performance since November 2020.
The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, rose 5.5% to 22.51. The 10-year US Treasury yield decreased 0.8% to 2.620%.
The dollar index was down 0.4% to 105.46. The euro was up 0.3% to $1.0253 against the dollar.
Precious metals reversed course with gold adding 0.3% to $1,772 and silver rising 0.1% to $20.37.
The global oil benchmark Brent crude was at $100.26 per barrel for a 3.5% loss, while the US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) was at $93.95 – down 4.7%.
