US stocks close Wednesday lower

VIX volatility index jumps 10.5%, Nasdaq retreats from previous day's record-high close

ISTANBUL (AA) - Major stock exchanges in the US closed Wednesday with losses.

The Dow was down 411 points, or 1.06%, to finish at 38,441. The S&P 500 lost 39 points, or 0.74%, to 5,266.

The Nasdaq, meanwhile, fell 99 points, or 0.58%, to end the day at 16,920 after it finished the previous day at record-high closing.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, jumped 10.5% to 14.28. The 10-year US Treasury yield rose 1.7% to 4.619%.

The dollar index added 0.5% to 105.14, while the euro shed 0.5% to $1.0801 against the greenback.

Precious metals were in negative territory, with gold losing 1% to $2,337 per ounce and silver decreasing 0.5% to $31.93.

Oil prices were down around 0.6% with global benchmark Brent crude at $83.46 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $79.32.
