ISTANBUL (AA) - US stocks closed Wednesday with losses after the GDP figure for the third quarter disappointed investors.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 91 points, or 0.22%, to finish at 42,141.
The S&P 500 was down 19 points, or 0.33% to 5,813. The Nasdaq Composite lost 104 points, or 0.56%, to 18.607.
The American economy expanded 2.8% in the third quarter, according to the Commerce Department's first advance reading that was released earlier. The figure was lower than estimates of 3%.
The VIX volatility index, referred to as the "fear index," jumped 5.2% to 20.34. The 10-year US Treasury yield rose 0.66% to 4.306%.
The US dollar index lost 0.2% to 104.10, while the euro rose 0.4% against the dollar, trading at $1.0860.
Precious metals were mixed. Gold added 0.4% to $2,787 per ounce, but silver fell 2.1% to $33.73.
Oil prices increased 2.7%, with global benchmark Brent crude at $72.61 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $69.05.
