US stocks open mixed after disappointing private jobs figures

VIX volatility index jumps 3.6%

ISTANBUL (AA) - US stocks opened mixed Wednesday with disappointing private jobs figures that were lower than expectations.

The Dow rose 55 points, or 0.17%, to 33,457 at 9.39 a.m. EDT. The S&P 500, on the other hand, lost eight points, or 0.2% to 4,092.

The Nasdaq fell 62 points, or 0.51%, to 12,064.

The American private sector added 145,000 jobs in March, coming in much lower than expectations of a 200,000 increase.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, jumped 3.6% to 19.69, and the 10-year US Treasury yield lost 0.7% to 3.313%.

The dollar index was almost flat at 101.62, while the euro shed 0.1% to $1.0943 against the greenback.

Precious metals were mixed, with gold adding 0.4% to $2,028 per ounce, but silver trimming 0.4% to $24.90.

Oil prices fell more than 0.2%, with global benchmark Brent crude at $84.75 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $80.51.
