US stocks open Monday higher after posting weekly losses

Gold loses 0.7% to $2,327 per ounce; oil prices decline around 1.5%

ISTANBUL (AA) - US stocks opened higher on Monday after posting weekly losses.

The Dow Jones was up 218 points, or 0.57%, to 38,201 at 10.09 a.m. EDT (1409GMT). The blue-chip index fell 1.6% last week.

The S&P 500 rose 26 points, or 0.51%, to 5,149. The index recorded Friday its worst daily performance since January, while it shed 2.7% last week.

The Nasdaq increased 45 points, or 0.28%, to 16,220 at the time. Last week, the tech-heavy index lost 0.5%.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, fell 1.2% to 17.09. The 10-year US Treasury yield jumped 3.6% to 4.660%.

The US dollar index climbed 0.06% to 106.10, while the euro declined 0.14% to $1.0627 against the greenback.

Precious metals were mixed, with gold losing 0.7% to $2,327 per ounce and silver rising 1% to $28.18.

Oil prices declined around 1.5% with global benchmark Brent crude at $88.93 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $84.41.
