WASHINGTON (AA) - US Secretary of State Antony Blinken thanked Kenyan President William Ruto in a phone call Wednesday for taking steps to reduce tensions in Kenya.

"The Secretary thanked President Ruto for taking steps to reduce tensions and pledging to engage in dialogue with the protestors and civil society,” the State Department said in a statement.

"The Secretary underscored the importance of security forces demonstrating restraint and refraining from violence and encouraged prompt investigations into allegations of human rights abuses,” it added.

Blinken welcomed Ruto’s commitment to Kenyans’ constitutionally-endowed rights, including peaceful assembly and due process for those detained, it said.

Ruto said he will not sign into law a controversial tax bill that has sparked widespread protests across the country, claiming the lives of more than 20 people.
