US urges citizens around the world 'to exercise increased caution'

State Department issues worldwide caution alert for US travelers 'due to increased tensions' around world

By Michael Hernandez

WASHINGTON (AA) - The State Department urged citizens Thursday to remain on alert around the world due to the heightened potential for attacks against Americans and US interests amid heightened global tensions.

"Due to increased tensions in various locations around the world, the potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests, the Department of State advises U.S. citizens overseas to exercise increased caution," the agency said in a global travel advisory.

The advisory comes amid an ongoing war in the beseiged Gaza Strip. Israeli strikes there have killed at least 3,785 Palestinians, and have wounded more than 12,000 people.

Israel launched Operation Swords of Iron following a shocking multi-pronged surprise attack by Hamas that included barrages of rocket launches and infiltrations into Israel by land, sea, and air.

Israel is expected to soon launch a ground invasion in Gaza as part of its campaign.

Over 1,400 people have been confirmed killed in Israel.
