US Vice President Kamala Harris announced a new $3 billion pledge to the Green Climate Fund.
Addressing the COP28 UN Climate Change Conference in Dubai, Harris said: "Today I am also proud to announce a new $3 billion pledge to the Green Climate Fund, which helps developing countries invest in resilience, clean energy and nature-based solutions."
The US has increased its contributions to over $9.5 billion this year alone, aligning with President Joe Biden's $11 billion goal by 2024, Harris added.
Highlighting the urgency of the climate crisis, Harris emphasized the importance of collective action, asserting that the world must come together to address this pivotal moment.
She acknowledged that both action and inaction on a global scale will have far-reaching consequences for billions of people in the decades to come.
While recognizing the progress made, Harris emphasized the ongoing challenges and the need for continued efforts.
"Around the world, there are those who seek to slow or stop our progress. Leaders who deny climate science, delay climate action and spread misinformation. Corporations that greenwash climate inaction and lobby for billions of dollars in fossil fuel subsidies of their own," she said.
In the context of the current situation, Harris said: "We must do more in order to keep our critical 1.5 degrees Celsius goal within reach."
She called for increased ambition, accelerated efforts, and courageous leadership to overcome challenges.
