ISTANBUL (AA) – Yemen’s Houthi group on Friday released footage showing them attacking a Greek-flagged oil tanker in the southern Red Sea earlier this week.
The tanker’s 25-person crew was rescued by an EU naval mission on Wednesday after abandoning ship, said the British military.
The tanker was carrying over 150,000 tons of crude oil from Iraq to Greece when it was attacked.
The ship is currently abandoned and on fire, approximately 77 nautical miles off the coast of Yemen.
The Red Sea is one of the world's most frequently used sea routes for oil and fuel shipments.
The Houthis have been targeting Israeli-linked cargo ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden in solidarity with the Gaza Strip, which has been under an Israeli onslaught since last Oct. 7.
Earlier this year, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced a multinational mission, Operation Prosperity Guardian, to counter Houthi attacks.
