Voting ends in Hungary's parliamentary election

Over 5 million people cast their votes to elect 199 members of parliament

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AA) - Voting on Sunday ended in Hungary for new deputies of the parliament.

The election body said there was high voter turnout. According to the Hungarian National Election Office, 68 percent of voters cast their vote, an eight percent increase from the last elections.

Voting opened at 6.00 a.m. local time (0400GMT) and ended at 7.00 p.m. local time (1700GMT).

More than five million citizens cast their votes to elect 199 parliamentarians in a single round.

Twenty-three parties and independent candidates are competing in the election which Prime Minister Viktor Orban is widely expected to win.

Orban and his ruling Fidesz party has had a two-thirds majority since 2010.
