NEW YORK (AA) – Wall Street closed mixed Thursday after a rise in tech stocks was balanced with weak macroeconomic data.
The Dow fell 42 points to finish the day at 19,899 and the S&P 500 was down almost two points to 2,269.
The Nasdaq, however, added 10 points to end at 5,497 – a new record.
Amazon and Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba saw their stock prices rise 3 percent and 4.2 percent, respectively, after strong online holiday sales.
The U.S. private sector, however, added just 153,000. jobs in December, according to the ADP Research Institute. Analysts expected a gain of 175,000.
