Wall Street ends mixed as investors await jobs data

September unemployment report to help determine Fed interest rate hike decision

NEW YORK (AA) – Wall Street closed mixed Thursday as the market and investors await the jobs report for September that will be announced Friday.

The Dow Jones was down 11 points to end the day at 18,269, while the S&P added one point to reach 2,160. The Nasdaq lost nine points to finish at 5,306.

The unemployment data is watched closely by the Federal Reserve.

If figures beat expectations, it would increase the likelihood of the Fed raising its benchmark interest rate this year, according to analysts.
