ISTANBUL (AA) – Women represented more than half of the science and technology workforce in the European Union in 2023, Eurostat said on Thursday.
The EU saw an increase of 2.9% in science and technology employment in 2023, reaching 78.3 million people, including 52% women, predominantly in service activities.
The highest percentages of women in science and technology were in the Baltic nations of Lithuania and Latvia at 63%, and the lowest in Malta with 45%, among some regions of Italy.
“Despite women making up the majority of the people employed in science and technology, they were underrepresented as scientists and engineers, accounting for 41% of total scientists and engineers in 2023,” said Eurostat.
