ANKARA (AA) - The Netherlands beat Japan 2-1 late Tuesday and will meet Italy in the last eight stage of the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup.
The Dutch side broke the deadlock in the 17th minute as forward Lieke Martens scored against Japan in Rennes, France.
Japan equalized near the end of the first half with a goal by midfielder Yui Hasegawa.
But Martens converted a penalty kick late in the match to make it 2-1 for the Netherlands.
Martens was named player of the match.
The victorious side of the showdown will take on Italy in the World Cup's quarterfinal phase.
