ISTANBUL (AA) – Severe tropical storm Maria continued to disrupt transport and infrastructure in northeastern Japan on Monday, increasing the risk of landslides, flooding, strong winds, and high waves.

Since Sunday, Japan Airlines have canceled more than 78 flights, many of which connect the northeastern Tohoku province with the rest of the country. This has already affected over 7,000 passengers, according to Tokyo-based Kyodo News.

Nippon Airways has also announced flight delays.

Airlines warn that more flights could be affected and that passengers should be aware of potential delays and cancellations on flights to and from northeastern Japan, particularly the Tohoku province.

East Japan Railway stated that shinkansen bullet trains to Tohoku, Akita, and Yamagata could be suspended or delayed.

In addition, East Nippon Expressway Company says chances are high that some sections of the Tohoku Expressway and the Joban Expressway will be closed through Tuesday due to heavy rains caused by the storm.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, up to 150mm of rain is expected in the next 24 hours, with the storm warning remaining in effect until Tuesday.
