Somalia has reiterated its criticism of Israel's decision to recognize its breakaway Somaliland region as a violation of international law and norms, pointing out that Tel Aviv has a history of similar violations over the years.

"Israel's recognition is a violation. First and foremost, it contravenes international law and established international norms. It demonstrates Israel's disregard for international law and norms," Somali Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Hassan Moallim Mohamud told reporters on the sidelines of the "Türkiye-Africa Strategic Dialogue" program organized by the National Intelligence Academy (MİA) in Ankara, while responding to questions about Israel's recognition of the breakaway region.

On Dec. 26 of last year, Israel announced that it had officially recognized Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state, becoming the only country to do so. The move drew sharp criticism across the region.

He pointed out that such moves are not limited to Somalia, as Israel has a history of similar violations over the years.

The minister emphasized that attempts to divide the country by seizing certain parts will not be allowed, highlighting friendly nations' support for Somalia's territorial integrity, including Türkiye.

Mohamud also praised Türkiye's role in Somalia's fight against terrorism, referencing the defense agreement signed between the two countries in 2024.

"Türkiye, adhering to the agreement, has brought the latest equipment and fighter jets to Somalia to combat terrorism," he stated.

The minister confirmed that Somali people have been awakened by the sound of the fighter jets sent from Türkiye, adding that seeing and hearing the aircraft has been a notable development.

Under the 2024 defense agreement, Türkiye has provided significant military support to Somalia, including armed drones and other assets to support anti-terror operations against al-Shabaab militants.

Türkiye has maintained a strong presence in Somalia through humanitarian aid, infrastructure projects, education programs, and military cooperation.

Regular Turkish Airlines flights have connected Mogadishu to Istanbul and other global destinations, providing direct air links between Somalia and international hubs.
