South Korea fines Mercedes $16.8M
South Korea accuses Mercedes for misleading advertisements on gas emissions
By Bahattin Gonultas
BERLIN (AA) - South Korea fined German automobile giant Mercedes-Benz 20.2 billion won (around $16.8 million) for misleading advertisements on gas emissions.
According to a statement released by the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) on Monday, Mercedes-Benz tampered with emission reduction devices by installing illegal software.
A total of 15 Mercedes models have such software installed, KFTC said.
Mercedes also misreported meeting Euro 6 emissions standards between August 2013 and December 2016, the commission added.
German automaker Daimler AG, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, was previously accused of manipulating diesel emissions figures in Europe and the US.
The company had to allocate billions of euros due to ongoing administrative processes and measures regarding diesel vehicles.
An EU investigation revealed that German auto giants BMW, Volkswagen and Daimler prevented the development of clean emission system technology with a collusion they made among themselves.
