South Korean president seeks parliament’s consent for arrest of opposition leader

Opposition leader Lee Jae-myung accused of breach of trust, corruption

By Anadolu staff

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has signed a motion requesting parliamentary consent to arrest opposition leader Lee Jae-myung on alleged corruption charges, local media reported on Tuesday.

On Monday, prosecutors sought an arrest warrant for Lee from a local court, shortly after he was shifted to a hospital as his health deteriorated on the 19th day of a hunger strike staged against the Yoon government's running of state affairs, according to the Seoul-based Yonhap News Agency.

The court delivered the request to the government as the parliament is required to waive Lee’s immunity from arrest.

Lee has been accused of breach of trust and corruption charges and his alleged involvement in a company's illegal cash remittance to North Korea.
