S&P climbs to record 5,000 level but closes lower
Index closes session at 4,997.91 points; oil prices soar more than 3%

ISTANBUL (AA) - The S&P 500 climbed Thursday to an all-time high of 5,000 points but failed to close above that level.
The index hit the milestone during the final minutes of trading on the New York Stock Exchange, while it closed the session up 2.85 points, or 0.06%, at 4,997.91.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose almost 49 points, or 0.13%, to finish at 38,726.
The Nasdaq, meanwhile, increased 37 points, or 0.24%, to end the day at 15,793.
The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, fell 0.04% to 12.79, while the 10-year US Treasury yield rose 1.4% to 4.157%.
The dollar index increased 0.07% to 104.14, while the euro added 0.07% to $1.0779 against the greenback.
Precious metals were mixed, with gold trimming 0.1% to $2,034 per ounce but silver increasing 1.7% to $22.59.
Oil prices rose more than 3%, with global benchmark Brent crude jumping 3.3% to $81.81 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude soaring 3.6% to $76.53 a barrel.
