ATHENS (AA) - The Spanish government approved a plan to compensate victims of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, media reports said Tuesday.
The plan, which was adopted on the recommendation of Spain’s ombudsman, includes measures to prevent, repair and settle the debt with victims, said public broadcaster, RTVE, citing Justice Minister Felix Bolanos.
The measures, which will be applied until 2027, are framed in five axes of action: recognition and reparation, care for victims, prevention, education to raise awareness and revelation, and investigation of the cases, according to Bolanos.
He said talks with the Church, whose role would be essential in the implementation of the plan, already started.
“The Church has recognized the existence of these abuses and is working on how to compensate the victims of the abuses that they recognize have occurred," he said.
