Spain confirms 1st monkeypox death in Europe

ANKARA (AA) – Spain on Friday confirmed the first monkeypox death in Europe and the second outside Africa in the growing global outbreak.
The Spanish Health Ministry said 120 monkeypox patients are currently hospitalized, accounting for 3.2% of the 3,750 patients on whom it has information.
Spain has so far detected 4,298 confirmed cases from 17 different communities, according to the ministry’s latest report.
Madrid has the highest number of infections with 1,656, followed by Catalonia’s 1,406 and Andalusia with 498.
According to the World Health Organization, Spain has the highest number of cases in the ongoing global outbreak, which it has declared a global health emergency.
Earlier on Friday, Brazil reported what was the first monkeypox death outside Africa in the current outbreak.
