Storm Elias causes power outages, floods in central Greece

ATHENS (AA) - Storm Elias created havoc in central Greece as it flooded thousands of homes, caused power outages, smashed bridges and damaged roads, media reports said Thursday.

Public broadcaster ERT said because of torrential rains, 80% of Volos, with a population of 200,000, in the region of Thessaly, is without electricity, according to the city’s mayor.

The Krafsidonas River overflowed onto the city’s streets and buried the remnants from a flood in early September, according to the mayor.

ERT said the city’s hospital was flooded and had no electricity.

Heavy rain also battered the northern island of Evia in the central region of Attica, causing floods, torrents and landslides that wash away villages.
