'Sudan at tipping point': UN relief chief

'We have told all parties how they should protect civilians from this carnage,' says Martin Griffiths

ISTANBUL (AA) – The UN relief chief expressed concern over "alarming reports" from war-hit El Fasher city in Sudan's North Darfur.

"A strike near a pediatric hospital supported by @MSF damaged the roof of the intensive care unit, killing two children," Martin Griffiths, the head of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, wrote on X Sunday.

Griffiths underlined that the medical equipment in Southern Hospital "are running dangerously low."

"We have told all the parties how they should protect civilians from this carnage. We can now expect them to do what the world and international humanitarian law expect. El Fasher is home to 800,000 people. Countless lives are at stake. Sudan is at a tipping point," he added.

The Sudanese army controls El Fasher, and it is supported by armed movements that signed the Juba peace agreement with the government in 2020.

The war in Sudan broke out in April 2023 between army Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo over disagreements about integrating the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) into the army.

The conflict has caused a devastating humanitarian crisis, and clashes have killed nearly 16,000 people and displaced millions.

On March 29, Sudan filed a complaint with the UN Security Council against the United Arab Emirates for allegedly supporting the RSF, which the UAE denied.
