International Red Cross head calls for civilians to be protected, unimpeded entry of aid to Gaza Strip

GAZA CITY, Palestine (AA) – The suffering of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip is “intolerable” amid Israeli air and ground attacks on the enclave, said the president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Monday.
“I have arrived in Gaza, where people’s suffering is intolerable,” Mirjana Spoljaric said on X.
“I repeat our urgent call for civilians to be protected in line with the laws of war and for aid to enter unimpeded,” she added. “The hostages must be released and ICRC allowed to safely visit them.”
Israel launched relentless air and ground attacks on the Gaza Strip following a cross-border attack by Hamas on Oct. 7, killing at least 15,899 people and injuring more than 42,000 others.
The Israeli death toll in the Hamas attack stood at 1,200, according to official figures, while nearly 136 hostages are believed to be held by Palestinian groups in Gaza.
Since a weeklong cease-fire ended on Friday, the Israeli army resumed its attacks in full force, taking hundreds of more casualties, including in the southern Gaza Strip, which the army had previously implied was a safe area.
