Supporters rally for wounded Colombian candidate Uribe after Bogota shooting

Hundreds gather at the hospital where the right-wing presidential hopeful is in critical condition, as police confirm a teenage arrest in the campaign event attack

BOGOTA, Colombia (AA) - Hundreds of people marched through Bogota Sunday morning in support of presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay, a day after an assassination attempt against him.

The demonstration headed towards the Fundacion Santa Fe hospital in northern Bogota, where Uribe Turbay remains in critical condition. Supporters have gathered outside the hospital awaiting updates on his recovery.

Witnesses said Uribe was attending a campaign event for his presidential bid when an assailant fired six shots, striking the 39-year-old right-wing candidate twice. Videos circulating on social media showed his face and back covered in blood as bodyguards rushed him to a vehicle. He was then taken to a local clinic where he was resuscitated. Hours later, he was taken to Fundacion Santa Fe, where he underwent two complex surgeries Saturday night.

Despite remaining in critical condition, Uribe Turbay's wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, confirmed the congressman survived the complex cerebrovascular surgery.

"I have asked the Fundacion Santa Fe to inform Colombians about Miguel's progress. I ask that you accept and respect our silence," Tarazona said, indicating the hospital would release official updates on his condition.

On Sunday morning, Fundacion Santa Fe reported Uribe's condition as "extremely serious, and the prognosis is guarded." The clinic detailed that Uribe was admitted in critical condition, undergoing immediate surgery for initial damage control, followed by neurosurgical and left thigh procedures before being transferred to intensive care for postoperative stabilization.

Tarazona shared a message on Instagram, posting a photo with Miguel captioned: "Love of my life, come back to me."

Police said a 14-year old was arrested following the attack, allegedly involved in carrying out the assault against the presidential candidate. The government ordered increased security for all presidential candidates as they begin attending campaign events for next year's elections.
