Suspect in UnitedHealthcare CEO's murder extradited to New York to face federal charges
Luigi Mangione 'planned his attack for months and stalked his victim for days before murdering him,' says US Attorney General Merrick Garland

HOUSTON, US (AA) - Luigi Mangione was extradited from Pennsylvania to New York on Thursday to face federal charges in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
The criminal complaint charged Mangione, 26, with murder through the use of a firearm, two stalking counts and one firearms offense.
"As alleged, Mangione planned his attack for months and stalked his victim for days before murdering him -- methodically planning when, where and how to carry out his crime," US Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement. "I am grateful to our state and local law enforcement partners for their tireless efforts to locate and apprehend the defendant and to ensure that he answers for his alleged crime."
Mangione is facing federal charges because prosecutors said his interstate travel, in which he took a bus from Atlanta to New York and used "interstate facilities" to carry out the premeditated killing using a 3D-printed ghost gun with a silencer, gave them jurisdiction in the case.
"Brian Thompson was gunned down in cold blood as he walked down a street in midtown Manhattan," said Acting US Attorney Edward Y. Kim for the Southern District of New York in a statement.
"Thompson was allegedly killed just because he held the position of chief executive officer of a health insurance company.
"As alleged, Luigi Mangione traveled to New York to stalk and shoot Thompson in broad daylight in front of a Manhattan hotel, all in a grossly misguided attempt to broadcast Mangione’s views across the country," Kim continued. "But this wasn’t a debate, it was murder."
The details of Thompson's murder have sent shockwaves throughout the United States as Mangione railed against the health care industry and said in a handwritten document confiscated by police that "frankly these parasites had it coming."
"Luigi Mangione allegedly conducted the carefully premeditated and targeted execution of Brian Thompson to incite national debates," Assistant Director James E. Dennehy of the FBI New York Field Office said in a statement. "This alleged plot demonstrates a cavalier attitude towards humanity -- deeming murder an appropriate recourse to satiate personal grievances."
During his court appearance, Mangione only replied "yes" to the judge when asked if he had read the criminal complaint against him and understood his legal rights.
Mangione did not make a bail application and will remain in custody until his next scheduled court appearance.
"We're going to respectfully decline to make any comment at this time," Mangione's attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, told reporters after the hearing. "Mr. Mangione appreciates everyone's support."
If convicted of the murder charge, Mangione could face either the death penalty or life in prison. He could also be handed a life sentence if convicted of the other three federal counts against him.
