Sweden ends investigation into Nord Stream sabotage

Public prosecutor cites lack of Swedish jurisdiction, adds German investigation still underway

By Ahmet Gencturk

ATHENS (AA) – Sweden has ended its investigation into the Nord Stream sabotage that occurred in September 2022, an official said Wednesday.

“The preliminary investigation has been systematic and thorough. Against the background of the situation, we now have, we can state that Swedish jurisdiction is missing,” public prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist said, according to the public broadcaster SVT.

However, he refused to make any comment on the results of the Swedish investigation.

“The German preliminary investigation continues and due to the secrecy that prevails for international judicial cooperation, I cannot comment further,” Ljungqvist further said.

In September 2022, underwater explosions targeted the Nord Stream 1 and the newly built Nord Stream 2 pipelines, which delivered Russian natural gas to Germany and the European region through the Baltic Sea.

Moscow accuses the West, particularly the US, of being directly involved in the blasts. It called for a UN-led international investigation into the likely sabotage, but the request was rejected.
