Sweden seeks pretrial detention of suspected spy

LONDON (AA) - A man employed by the Swedish Armed Forces has been sought for remand in custody on suspicion of espionage, media reported on Wednesday.

Authorities sought pretrial detention for the man in his 30s in Sweden on suspicion of espionage committed within the past year.

He was arrested Sunday on suspicion of espionage, Swedish public broadcaster SVT reported, citing the Armed Forces.

The Swedish Security Service (SAPO) said an investigation has been ongoing for some time.

In 2024, the suspected man started a company intended to operate in the field of cybersecurity, while the prosecutor has yet to disclose for which actor the man is suspected of spying.

"We cannot disclose which country or countries, or which intelligence or security services, he is alleged to have assisted," prosecutor Per Lindqvist told Swedish TT News Agency on Monday.

Prosecutors had previously said the suspected crime was committed in Stockholm County between Jan. 1, 2022, and Jan. 4, 2026. However, reports said the period covered by the current remand request runs only from January 2025 to January 2026.
