Swiss travel to US drops amid Trump effect: Report

GENEVA (AA) - The Swiss travel to the US has fallen in 2025, with the Swiss Travel Federation (FSV) warning that political developments under President Donald Trump are discouraging visitors.

A survey of 172 members revealed a 6% decrease in US trips in the first half of the year compared to 2024, according to a Swissinfo report published on Wednesday, with a decline of approximately 10% expected for the full year. The federation estimates transatlantic passenger numbers will fall to 340,000 this year, down from 380,000 in 2024.

"The current political situation is negatively affecting traveller behaviour," the FSV said.

FSV director Andrea Beffa told the AWP agency the trend was foreseeable.

"There had already been a decline during Donald Trump’s first term in office," she said, adding while most bookings made before last November's election went ahead, demand has been declining "since the election of the new occupant of the White House."

Alternative destinations such as Canada, Australia, and several Asian and African countries have benefited. In summer, the most popular destinations were Spain, Greece, and Türkiye, according to the survey.

"They simply choose other destinations. I predict that in 2026 there will be an even bigger drop compared to this year," said Beffa.
