ISTANBUL (AA) – Taiwan announced on Friday the dates for the presidential and parliamentary elections that will take place next year.

The Central Election Committee (CEC) said the elections for the 16th president and vice president, as well as the 113-member 11th Legislative Yuan or legislature body, will be held on Jan. 13, 2024.

Eligible candidates for the elections will be able to file nominations from Nov. 20 to 24 later this year.

Taiwan's legislative assembly, president, and vice president all serve four-year terms, with the president having a maximum of two terms in office.

After the final list of presidential and vice-presidential candidates is released on Dec. 15, Taiwan’s CEC will “hold televised political speeches for the candidates for the presidential and vice-presidential elections from Dec. 16 to Jan. 12 next year,” according to the official Central News Agency.

Incumbent President Tsai Ing-wen, who succeeded Ma Ying-jeou on May 20, 2016, is the first woman president in the country’s history and will complete her two terms in office.
