Czech Republic in recent years intensified ties with Taiwan despite strong criticism by Beijing

ATHENS (AA) - Taiwan's foreign minister arrived in the Czech capital of Prague amid protests by China, media reports said Tuesday.

Joseph Wu will meet the President of the Czech Senate, Milos Vystrcil, and have an unofficial dinner with the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Marketa Pekarova Adamova, according to Radio Prague.

He is also expected to participate Wednesday in a security conference organized by the European Values Organisation, it added, noting that the visit came despite repeated warnings from China last week to European countries against having contact with Taiwanese officials.

In recent years, the Czech Republic moved to intensify its ties with Taiwan.

In late January, Czech President Petr Pavel spoke on the telephone with Taiwanese President Chai Jing-wen after he was elected.

A Czech delegation headed by the speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Adamova visited Taiwan in late March.
