Teamsters not to endorse any US presidential candidate

'Neither major candidate was able to make serious commitments to our union to ensure the interests of working people are always put before Big Business,' says union

WASHINGTON (AA) - The Teamsters executive board said Wednesday the union will not endorse a US presidential candidate in the November 5 election.

"The Teamsters thank all candidates for meeting with members face-to-face during our unprecedented roundtables.

"Unfortunately, neither major candidate was able to make serious commitments to our union to ensure the interests of working people are always put before Big Business," said General President Sean M. O’Brien.

He said the union "strongly" encourages all members to vote in the election and to remain engaged in the political process.

"But this year, no candidate for President has earned the endorsement of the Teamsters’ International Union," he added.

Earlier Wednesday, data showed a majority of members backed former US President and Republican nominee Donald Trump against Vice President Kamala Harris.

Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents 1.3 million hardworking people in the US, Canada and Puerto Rico.
