ISTANBUL (AA) – Thailand’s newly-appointed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin paid his first overseas bilateral visit to Cambodia on Thursday.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet hosted Thavisin at the Peace Palace in the capital Phnom Penh and held “bilateral talks aimed at charting a course of action to further deepen and expand the extensive spectrum of mutually beneficial ties under the bilateral and multilateral framework,” said a statement released by Cambodia's Foreign Ministry.

The leaders also discussed common regional and international issues.

After the meeting, Thavisin officially handed over the Transit and Reception Centre for Victims of Trafficking and Other Vulnerable Groups in Poipet city in the Banteay Meanchey province of Cambodia.

The Thai premier visited the US last week to attend the UN General Assembly.

Hun assumed office on Aug. 22, the day the Thai parliament elected Srettha Thavisin as premier.
