ISTANBUL (AA) - Thailand’s Constitutional Court on Wednesday disbanded the opposition Move Forward Party (MFP) over violating laws related to monarchy in the Southeast Asian nation, according to local media.
The Constitutional Court delivered the verdict in the capital Bangkok and “ruled to dissolve” the party, the Thai Enquirer reported.
In its verdict, the court said it has “no choice but to order the dissolution of Move Forward Party to protect the monarchy institution.”
The party’s current and former leaders, including Chaithawat Tulathon and Pita Limjaroenrat, and those who were members of the executive board between March 25, 2021, and Jan. 31, 2024, were banned from holding political office for 10 years.
Move Forward Party has become the ninth prominent political party to be dissolved since 2007 in Thailand.
The party had campaigned before last year’s elections to amend the lese-majeste law that shields the king from criticism if they formed the government.
