Thailand’s electoral authority on Wednesday approved a list of 200 new senators to replace those appointed by the military junta five years ago, local media said.

"The Election Commission has agreed to certify the list of 200 prospective new senators and 100 reservists, following the final round of voting on June 26th," Thailand’s PBS News reported.

Election Commission Secretary-General Sawaeng Boonmee is expected to announce the full details of the decision soon. However, he confirmed on Wednesday that the commission had approved the list of 200 new senators.

The new senators will have limited power in the prime minister's election, but they will be able to vote on legislation and appoint members to key government organizations.

The electoral authority's decision has cleared the way for new senators to join the 200-member upper house and replace the junta-appointed senators who were appointed in 2019.
