KAMPALA, Uganda (AA) – The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) graduated more than 100 beneficiaries of vocational training courses on Tuesday including in tailoring, fashion and design in Yumbe in the Northern Region of Uganda.
The initiative is a continuation of a project launched by Turkish first lady Emine Erdogan in 2016 at the Islamic University In Uganda (IUIU) to boost women’s employment.
TIKA, together with the SENA Foundation, a Turkish humanitarian non-governmental organization, has been providing logistical assistance for the project since its inception.
Naima Melsa Gule Avako, a member of parliament for Yumbe District, said the project in partnership with TIKA has created a cadre of women’s employability skills which will significantly improve their household incomes.
The Turkish government through TIKA has several projects in Uganda, helping hundreds of people to reduce poverty.
Omer Aykon, TIKA’s country coordinator for Uganda, said Uganda can count on the continued support of the Turkish authorities in many fields. He also donated a fish pellet feed machine for Yumbe and the West Nile region as a whole.
TIKA has so far completed 76 projects and is slated to launch seven more in the first half of 2024, according to the country’s coordinator.
