Trump, Bondi 'can't just decide to arrest sitting judges at will': Senate Democratic leader

WASHINGTON (AA) - US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer slammed the arrest Friday of a judge in the state of Wisconsin for allegedly helping an undocumented migrant avoid arrest last week.

"There are no kings in America," Chuck Schumer wrote on X.

His remarks came after Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that Hannah Dugan, a county judge in Milwaukee, was arrested. "No one is above the law," said Bondi.

"(President Donald) Trump and Bondi can't just decide to arrest sitting judges at will and threaten judges into submission.

"This is a dangerous escalation, an attack on the separation of powers, and we will fight this with everything we have," Schumer said.

The Justice Department previously signaled that it intended to crack down on judges who did not comply with federal immigration efforts.

In January, agency officials ordered federal prosecutors to investigate state or local officials who they believe are interfering with the Trump administration’s immigrant crackdown.
