WASHINGTON (AA) - President-elect Donald Trump announced Wednesday he picked former Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker to be the US ambassador to NATO.
"Matt is a strong warrior and loyal Patriot, who will ensure the United States' interests are advanced and defended," Trump said in a statement.
He said his pick will strengthen the US' relationships with NATO allies and stand firm against threats to peace and stability.
"He will put America First," said Trump.
Whitaker served as acting attorney general from November 2018 - February 2019. He served as Chief of Staff to Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
Trump's Cabinet is shaping up following his election win on Nov. 5. He has so far announced names to lead more than half of 15 agencies.
He will be inaugurated Jan. 20.
