WASHINGTON (AA) - Former US President Donald Trump on Friday said he would work with Russia and Ukraine to settle war in Ukraine ahead of a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelenskyy.
The meeting took place in New York, as Zelenskyy visited the US for UN General Assembly's 79th session and a series of talks in Washington DC, which included meetings with President Joe Biden and members of Congress.
Speaking to reporters, Trump, who is the Republican presidential nominee, said he would end the war with an agreement, which he said is "good for both sides," NBC News reported.
"We’re going to work very much with both parties to try and get this settled and get it worked out," Trump said. "It has to end. At some point, it has to end. He’s gone through hell. His country has gone through hell."
The NBC News also reported that Trump praised the "good relationship" with Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Zelenskyy, for his part, said he believes Trump and he have a common view that Ukraine has to win against Russia, adding that US presidential election in November is important.
"We understand that after November ... we hope that the strength of the United States will be very strong," he said.
Both Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, have been vocal critics of US aid to Ukraine.
Zelenskyy’s visit to the White House on Thursday may mark one of his last engagements with the Biden administration before the US presidential election in November.
During the meeting, President Biden announced nearly $8 billion in new aid for Ukraine, a package that Zelenskyy described as "a great help."
