Trump pushes need for 'fair' trade agreement in first call with India's Modi

WASHINGTON (AA) - President Donald Trump called for India and the US to develop a "fair" trade relationship during his first telephone call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday.

The White House said the discussion between the leaders of the world's top two largest democracies was "productive," and "discussed expanding and deepening cooperation" as well as "a range of regional issues, including security in the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East, and Europe."

"The President emphasized the importance of India increasing its procurement of American-made security equipment and moving toward a fair bilateral trading relationship. The leaders discussed plans for Prime Minister Modi to visit the White House, underscoring the strength of the friendship and strategic ties between our nations," it said in a statement.

"Both leaders emphasized their commitment to advance the U.S.-India strategic partnership and the Indo-Pacific Quad partnership, with India hosting Quad Leaders for the first time later this year," it added.

Modi earlier Monday confirmed that he spoke with Trump, writing on X that he congratulated the American president "on his historic second term."

“We are committed to a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership,” Modi said and added: “We will work together for the welfare of our people and towards global peace, prosperity, and security.”

Modi also spoke to Trump following his election win in November.
