MEXICO CITY (AA) – The federal government on Wednesday proposed a plan to help Mexicans living in the United States from becoming victims of “abuses” and “fraud’” in the wake of Donald Trump’s presidential election victory.
In a news release, the foreign ministry listed 11 actions that include a 24-hour hotline and mobile phone app to help migrants “avoid any conflict situation” and “deal with any doubts about immigration measures”.
It also said it would increase appointments for passports, birth certificates and consular identification at its 50 consulates in the U.S.
In a video message, Foreign Affairs Minister Claudia Ruiz Massieu urged Mexican in the U.S. to “not fall into provocation” and “not be misled” in these “moments of uncertainty.
“We will bring information and services to you wherever you are. You can also go to the nearest consulate or call us. We'll be closer than ever to inform, accompany and protect you,” she said in the video posted to social media.
The program was unveiled just days after Trump said in an interview he would deport or jail 2 - 3 million undocumented immigrants who have committed crimes in the United States, immediately after taking office.
During the campaign, Trump also promised to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. According to the Pew Research Center, 11 million undocumented migrants are in the U.S. – 5.8 million are Mexicans.
