Turkey’s CHP: Intervention not solution for Venezuela

ANKARA (AA) - It cannot be expected that the problems in Venezuela can be resolved in the axis of calls for foreign intervention of any country, deputy chairman of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) said Thursday.

"Foreign intervention will not bring prosperity and peace to the people of Venezuela, on the contrary, it will lead Venezuela to a worse situation than it is today," Unal Cevikoz said in a statement.

“The institutional divergence that emerged as a result of the social polarization in Venezuela caused a systemic crisis in the country,” said Cevikoz. "This situation has the potential to cause global reflections.”

Cevikoz highlighted CHP does not have an approach which advances opposing or advocating Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

He said CHP finds it more appropriate to work on a roadmap that would enable Venezuela to solve its problems in a democratic way.

Cevikoz said to solve the crisis in the South American country, an electoral process should be offered in which Venezuela will agree to both sides.

Venezuela has been rocked by protests since Jan. 10, when Maduro was sworn in for a second term following a vote boycotted by the opposition.

Tensions rose when Juan Guaido, who heads Venezuela’s National Assembly, declared himself acting president Jan. 23 -- a move which was supported by the U.S. and many European and Latin American countries.

Russia, Turkey, China, Iran, Bolivia and Mexico have put their weight behind Maduro.

U.S. President Donald pointed to military intervention as a possible of a number of choices he could use to help solve the crisis.
