Fast-breaking meal in Hounslow brings Turkish communities together
By Zuhal Demirci
LONDON (AA) - A non-profit Turkish charity held an iftar, or fast-breaking meal, on Tuesday for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
The event, organized by the West London Turkish Volunteers, took place in Hounslow, west London.
Türkiye's Ambassador to the UK Osman Koray Ertas, Consul General to London Bekir Utku Atahan and the Embassy's Religious Services Counsellor Ensari Yeniturk were among the attendees along with Turkish people living in London.
Speaking at the event, Ambassador Ertas mentioned the devastating Feb. 6 earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria and reminded those attending of the solidarity among the Turkish community after the quakes.
Touching on Britain's King Charles III's visit to the West London Turkish Volunteers in February, Ertas hailed their work and campaigns.
He said the visit showed how they represented Türkiye and the Turkish people very well at that time.
Following the devastating earthquakes, Charles on Feb. 14 met in London with members of the Turkish and Syrian communities, including the West London Turkish Volunteers, to show solidarity with the quake-hit people.
For his part, Atahan said the West London Turkish Volunteers was among the organizations that played a key role in fundraising campaigns for the quake victims.
He also thanked women volunteers for their active role during donation and fundraising campaigns.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Halit Karakaya said they have sent nearly 100 tons of aid materials to Türkiye's quake-hit regions.
