WASHINGTON (AA) - Türkiye's 101st Republic Day was celebrated Tuesday with a reception at the Turkish Embassy in Washington, D.C., bringing together diplomats, community leaders and guests from various backgrounds.
The event opened with the national anthem of Türkiye, followed by a video message from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
“On behalf of my country and my nation, I extend my heartfelt thanks to all our friends and guests who share in the joy of our festival, both here and in different regions around the world,” Erdogan said.
He honored Türkiye's historical legacy, from the Seljuks and Ottomans to the modern Republic, adding: "We are determined to eternally uphold an independent, strong, honorable and prosperous Türkiye."
Turkish ambassador to the US Sedat Onal also addressed the gathering, noting the progress Türkiye has made since declaring itself a republic on Oct. 29, 1923.
"Today, 101 years later, we stand at a different point," he said, highlighting advancements in economic self-sufficiency, industrial development and other areas.
Onal also reflected on Türkiye's foreign policy priorities, citing the foundational principle set by the country’s founder, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk: “Peace at home, peace in the world.”
Given the complex geography and regional conflicts, Onal stressed Türkiye's dedication to diplomacy and regional stability.
He also underscored Türkiye's longstanding relationship with the United States, describing it as a NATO alliance that the country aims to strengthen.
"Our bilateral relations with the United States have a long history...We seek to advance them strategically and across diverse fields such as economics, energy, culture and people-to-people ties,” he said.
